The NYDC may very well be the center of design in NY, but we’d argue our reach extends to all parts of the world. Located at 200 Lexington Avenue, the New York Design Center is the country’s oldest furniture and design building. Built in 1926 as the New York Furniture Exchange, 200 Lex was the dream of visionaries in the furniture industry. The culinary lounge at One Manhattan Square designed by Mayer David Studio, also the creative force behind Oscar de la Renta’s boutiques. Behind the iconic floor-to-ceiling windows of this SoHo gem lies a magical world for art and afternoon tea. The hyperlocal, Danish minimalism-meets-New-York-realism hotel in the heart of SoHo.

Sales are expected to launch this fall, and prices will likely start at $5.35 million. The New York Design Center continues to introduce initiatives further proving its dedication to the design industry. The Gallery at 200 Lex powered by inCollect, located on the 10th floor, features over 55 galleries of fine antiques and 20th Century Vintage dealers. The program “Access to Design” is intended to educate consumers on the value of good design, offering tools to consumers and design making NYDC a destination for all design needs. Harris wanted apartments that felt like houses and flowed effortlessly from one room to another.

Hotels

This concrete jungle is a living canvas where everyone's story is etched into its fabric. So, lace up those walking shoes and get ready to stroll through the larger-than-life Big Apple. This historic 16-story, 500,000-square-foot building designed by Ely Jacques Kahn was originally available only to furniture and department store buyers.

17 Jane Street is another example of a building whose designer has a background in bringing fashion stores to fruition. Architect Sir David Chipperfield created a modern aesthetic that includes cream tones, light woods, and elements of marble. In addition to work that includes residential, cultural, and civic projects around the world, Chipperfield designed Valentino’s store on Fifth Avenue in 2014. His condo project in New York has seven residences including two townhouses with private backyards and a large duplex penthouse. The New York Design Center houses nearly 100 showrooms representing more than 500 lines of premier, traditional, contemporary, residential and contract furniture. In addition you can also find the industry’s finest fabric, floor covering, lighting, wall covering, kitchen and bath and decorative accessory resources — making 200 Lex New York’s marketplace providing imaginative solutions to any design challenge.

In the late 1970s, the building began to shift its focus towards interior design and architecture; and in 1981, emerged as the New York Design Center. Housing over 100 showrooms, including 33,000 square feet of antiques located on the 10th floor. Take 109 East 79th Street, for example, a 20-story building on the Upper East Side that has nods to Art Deco, midcentury, and Bauhaus design.

Also downtown, One Manhattan Square on the Lower East Side was designed by Meyer Davis Studio, the designer of Oscar de la Renta’s worldwide boutiques. The building has over 100,000 square feet of amenities such as a multilevel fitness center and bowling alley, along with modern interiors that combine function and style. Welcome to the city that never sleeps, where the hustle is real and the energy is abuzz. From the towering skyscrapers that paint the skyline to the street art of Bushwick, NYC's cool is etched into every corner.

There’s also 40 Bleecker, the first residential building designed by Ryan Korban, who began his design career doing the interiors of luxury apparel stores such as Balenciaga, Alexander Wang, and Aquazzura. He then moved on to work on homes for fashion designers, models, and actors such as James Franco, Kanye West, and Debra Messing. The classic-meets-contemporary 12-story, 61-residence condominium building in NoHo he worked on is now complete, with remaining residences priced from $3.65 million.

Why you have so many gnats right now and how to get rid of them

how to get rid of flies in the house quickly

Clothes moths are tiny winged insects that damage natural fibers, such as wool, silk, leather, and feathers. They stand out among their peers because not all moths damage clothes. Only two species do—the casemaking clothes moth and the webbing clothes moth. Both are about ¼ inch long and have a wingspan of approximately ½ inch.

Our Rating Methodology

Keeping your cans sealed and away from points of entry should help, Rollins says. The constant moisture in drains provides a suitable environment for flies to breed. Humans are an inherently messy species, and thus houseflies are present almost everywhere humans live. If you don't want to make a spritz you could try dousing a clean microfibre cloth in one of the fragrant oils and hang it directly in the window to deter flies from the main entry point. The coins inside are added to create a prism of colour via the reflection of the water to add to the effect, to overwhelm the fly's eyes to stop it from approaching an open window. Because like when trying to keep ants away or keep wasps at bay, natural solutions are always the preferred methods where you can.

Decaying Matter

Place food in sealed containers and promptly clean any food or beverage spills. Commercial outdoor flytraps are either disposable and or permanent so you have to refill them with the bait and clean them when they are full. Because outdoor fly traps often have a strong odor and contain pesticides, they have to be placed at a minimum distance from human activity. The vast majority of flies that may take up residence in your house are not harmful, but they can be a nuisance.

Are House Flies Harmful?

If you require professional advice, please contact a pest control company. A clean house with clean pets does not provide a conducive environment for flies to thrive. It would be best if you inspected your doors, window screens, and any other opening in the house to establish a tear or compromise that would let in the flies. This is a classic backyard repellant not only against flies but also other flying and stinging insects. Both the smell of the candle and the flames and smoke act as repellants.

"There are far better, completely harmless, and eco-friendly ways to eliminate these pests." Discover six such solutions below. Flies are definitely a nuisance when they’re buzzing around inside. Those annoying bugs can spread bacteria to anything they touch, so it’s important to kill them as soon as you can. Whether you’re dealing with a few stray flies or a swarm that found their way in, we’ve got you covered on how to get rid of them.

herb plants

Hang a non-toxic disposable fly trap filled with water outdoors near your windows or doors to augment the spray solution. Erlich Pest Control recommends starting with an empty plastic two-liter soda bottle. Cut off the top third (generally, where the top of the label used to be) and set aside. Then, pour something sweet in to the bottom of the bottle to lure in the flies.

How to Get Rid of House Flies: Your Guide to Banishing These Pests Forever

how to get rid of flies in the house quickly

Here's how you can get rid of house flies without having to spend your days with a swatter. Combine equal parts of the two in a small bowl and add a pinch of sugar to the mix. “The fermented smell from the vinegar can attract flies,” Pereira says.

Chemical Remedies to Get Rid of Clothes Moths

Fly traps are a common method but if you don't want to buy them you can make your own using ingredients from the kitchen. For a more low-maintenance approach, you can use citronella torches, candles, or sprays for the same effect (via Wildlife Informer). These products are made from the citronella plant's oils and are non-toxic to humans. Candles and torches come in various colors, sizes, and shapes to blend with your outdoor decor. And citronella spray is an awesome alternative for people allergic to DEET, a common bug spray ingredient. Plus, these items are so common that you can easily purchase them for a reasonable price.

Light trap

This solution allows you to leave the windows and doors open and not be quite so restrictive with having food out on the counter inside the house. Getting rid of flies in your home may require a combination of treatments, repellents and preventative measures. Expect to build a customized solution with multiple products and techniques, which may include fly bait, fly traps, fly foggers and more. Flies are also drawn to warmth and light, which is why homes are at such high risk for fly infestations. In a warm environment, flies can live up to three months and are prolific breeders.

“While the smell is unpleasant to humans, it lures flies to a trap that they are unable to get out of,” McClean explains. Certain plants, like basil, lavender, and mint, may actually help repel flies and other pests, Troyano says. It's best to get your house fly problem in check as soon as possible. Even though house flies have short lifespans, “they can quickly reproduce in large numbers, leading to large house fly populations if not identified and effectively controlled,” says Fredericks. Many housefly infestations are due to excess moisture and debris accumulating around the house.

Many even offer organic or pet-friendly options, so don’t hesitate to ask for help. Drain flies are usually harder to control than other types because of where they nest and reproduce, and their eggs are often unharmed by water and common cleaners. Trapping adult flies usually won’t solve the problem, as they’ve likely already laid eggs.

Instead of whacking them with a fly swatter—although it can be amazingly satisfying—our guide will teach you how to take back control and keep that fly out of your house. Mint and basil are commonly thought of as scents that flies dislike, meaning their presence acts as a simple repellent. If you have herb plants indoors, place the pots near the open windows in an attempt to stop flies in their tracks from crossing the threshold. "For starters, you should avoid attracting them in the first place," Kameliya Ilieva, pest control specialist for Fantastic Services tells woman&home. Flies can't be controlled unless you take the proper prevention methods. By cutting off fly access to the home and any food sources, you'll better be able to get rid of flies inside the home and keep them away for the long-term.

Remember to review screening on sliding doors, screened rooms, porches, and gazebos. Just like roaches and mice, flies multiply faster than you can say the word, and we’ve put together a guide to get to the bottom of the problem and help you get rid of house flies for once and for all. This is a sticky strip of paper that you can easily string up from the ceiling or wherever the flies are hanging out the most. When flies (or other winged insects) check it out, they get stuck to the paper. The problem is likely originating outside of your house, but a few indoor hang-ups can make it worse.

Make sure they don’t have areas to lay eggs and remove things that can attract the flies. The first step in preventing clothes moths is keeping your home clean and well-organized. Vacuum and clean your entire home regularly, paying close attention to closets, storage areas, and upholstered furniture.

You can also use Pine-Sol to clean the interior of your trash cans. Flies steer clear of plant herbs, making them a natural deterrent. In areas where flies enter your home or gather, place a live basil plant in a pot.

How to Get Rid of House Flies and Keep Them Far Away

how to get rid of flies in the house quickly

In common terms, a fly is any insect in the Diptera order that has only a single pair of operating wings. This can include quite a large number of insect species, but the flies that plague our homes in the summertime are usually ordinary houseflies (Musca domestic). This insect can be up to 3/8 inch long with bulging reddish eyes. This creature will spend most of its time flying, and it's quick enough to pose a challenge when you wield a fly-swatter. There are certain plants and flowers that attract flies, particularly if they produce sugary substances, so it's worth a check to see if your indoor plants are the problem and are attracting flies. Keeping your kitchen bin clean and smelling fresh can eradicate the problem before it starts, as we discuss in our guide on how to get rid of fruit flies.

The Best Fly Traps of 2023

Unfortunately, animals do not have a sophisticated way of cleaning up like humans and flies, like hanging around pets that are not clean, translating to a fly infestation in your home. Dirty dishes, overflowing trash cans that are not lidded or a compost bin are common food sources for flies. If you already have a fly infestation, destroying their breeding grounds is the best way to eliminate them. Depending on the fly species, breeding grounds vary, so correctly identifying the fly species you are dealing with is helpful.

Make fly traps

Use chlorine to treat cesspits as often as once a month to get rid of flies and protect yourself and your loved ones from sanitary-related diseases. Flies are very much attracted to human waste and wastewater, and the cesspit is a hub of these materials. Flies scavenge for their foods wherever present, and your house is a potential hotspot or source of food for the flies. Any of these could be why you have flies flying from one surface and landing on the other all over, and you first need to establish the cause of the infestation to get rid of them permanently.

How to Prevent Gnats

Along with vinegar, fruit flies like the smell of fruity beer and wine. Leave out an almost-empty open bottle of stale beer or old wine — the skinny neck will keep the flies trapped. Try these expert tips to get rid of gnats and fruit flies quickly. With professional help, you can feel confident that your infestation is eradicated from all areas of your home. By pointing out possible access points and applying commercial-grade insect repellant, these specialists can help you keep your home fly-free. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), many species of bats survive solely by eating insects, and they feast on an impressive number, given their small size.

These won’t kill the flies themselves, but they may flush out any obstructions where the flies may be breeding. There are also enzymatic drain cleaners that will kill the bacteria and scum that drain flies feed on and lay their eggs in. Although many people think of chemical insecticides first for any pest control, chemical control should be avoided if possible. Through overuse, the common housefly has gradually developed resistance to many chemicals, which means that increasingly heavy applications are necessary to kill them. While pesticides may make some sense outdoors, it's best to avoid them indoor spaces whenever possible. "Invest in a fly screen door or mesh curtain to protect your home from flies with ease," suggests Jordan Foster, a pest control expert at Fantastic Pest Control.

How to Prevent Flies

When the flies land on the trap, a fatal electric shock is emitted that kills them instantly. Many light traps also include a tray at the bottom so you don't end up with electrocuted flies all over your floor. You can find light traps in a number of different places, including superstores, home improvement stores, pest service companies, and online. All you need are a simple set of tools for securing your light trap to the wall and an outlet to plug it in. When you buy a fly trap, make sure it is suitable for indoor use, as some products contain pesticides. With homemade fly traps, you can get rid of flies naturally without the use of chemical insecticides.

They deposit these pathogens into your home by their feet and from their mouths. But if you feel like you are constantly seeing flies, they’re extremely bothersome, and home remedies aren’t working, it may be time to call in a professional exterminator. Because most flies make their way into your home from the outdoors, Pereira recommends making some changes to your surrounding property. However, houseflies are not considered a significant carrier of diseases.

Four methods to remove houseflies

There are numerous ways to get rid of houseflies naturally without introducing harsh chemicals in your home. They love bright, humid spaces like a sunny bathroom or kitchen windowsill, and they're great at trapping pests. Natural repellents can also work to get rid of flies and prevent them from coming into the home in the first place. To start, Chris revealed it was vital to identify where the house flies were breeding. The articles on Pestpit.com are informational only and are regarding DIY pest control.

"Just place some basil, marigold, lavender, bay leaves, or catnip around windows and doors. They will not only keep insects at bay but also beautify your surroundings. Tamara tried this apple cider vinegar method to get rid of flies in her house. One common treatment uses cayenne pepper steeped in water as a spray treatment. Spritz in doorways and around windowsills and the sharp odor will keep the flies away.

Generally speaking, some of the same tactics you might use to banish flies are the same ones you could use to keep them away—especially using natural repellants like plants and eucalyptus oil. In general, though, the best thing you can do to keep the bugs away is to keep your home and its surroundings as clean and funk-free as possible. If you don’t have that much space to work with, at least try to keep the pile away from doors and windows. On the bright side, you may be pleased to learn that there are some proactive steps you can take to deter flies from moving into your home sweet home.

Flies are one of the few insects that are actively affected by colors, so use a flyswatter in a neutral tone for superior stealth. Be sure to mount light traps away from entrances and windows, so they can’t be seen from the outside. Regularly inspect your clothing and textiles, such as curtains, tablecloths, and cloth napkins, for signs of moth activity, such as holes, larvae, or cocoons. Keep your rooms well-ventilated, and consider keeping a natural oil diffuser in your wardrobe at all times.

how to get rid of flies in the house quickly

Since fruit flies and house flies are both attracted to the sugar in produce, it’s easy enough to make your own fly traps out of common household materials. The quickest way to kill maggots is to boil water, add vinegar to the water, and pour the mixture over the larva. The water kills them and the vinegar will help to eliminate any odors that attract flies to lay their eggs there, according to Terro, makers of pesticides.

If your compost pile is close to your house and attracts a lot of flies, it can lead to a fly infestation indoors. Consider moving it farther from the house or switching to a closed compost bin, which also keeps rodents out. Pest control providers will identify the species you’re dealing with and apply the most appropriate solutions. Often, they’ll identify where or how the flies are entering your home and remedy the problem to keep flies from coming back.

"Leaks should be fixed immediately and areas prone to moisture should be ventilated properly." A simple trick to keep the bins fresh is to sprinkle a small serving of baking soda directly onto the bottom of your bin before placing a bin bag in. Discovered when cleaning with baking soda, this will help to catch any moisture should anything spill from the bin bag once it's in use while subtly scenting the bin in the meantime. This water and coin trick became a firm favourite a few years ago on social media when cleaning forums were filled with praise for this simple yet seemingly effective fly deterrent. Although food-grade products with low toxicity levels are available, avoid applying them onto surfaces used for food preparation or close to pets and kids.

Inside, make sure you stay on top of cat litter patrol because lingering odors will also attract house flies. Typically, however, you’ll find a maggot infestation in an open or loosened garbage can under and around rotting organic materials and food. McClean says that outdoor fly traps “are a great non-toxic solution to get rid of pesky and unwanted flies.” He recommends the Rescue Outdoor Reusable Fly Trap for outdoor use only.

Windstar’s masted ships cut a romantic silhouette, and lend a feeling of timelessness and adventure to every cruise. The sensuous experience of sailing on the teak-deck ships extends to the excitement of the cruise line’s excellent market tours. Windstar makes a point to offer at least one chef-led market tour on every sailing, during which cruisers can explore the locavore life, sample new flavors, and watch vendors’ eyes widen at the massive orders. Windstar’s dedication to providing locally-sourced cuisine onboard also means that the cruise line stimulates local economies and prepares the ingredients you helped pick into mouthwatering dishes.

As the societal focus shifts toward locally sourced, sustainably produced and ethically grown ingredients—organic food, and farm-to-table restaurants… cruise lines have no choice but to follow that trend. All of the options are included in the price — except for a new dinner theater experience on Resilient Lady — which represents a terrific value without sacrificing quality. When Virgin Voyages debuted, it did away with the traditional main dining room experience and, instead, added nearly a dozen restaurants that rival the ambience, quality and creativity of any upscale eatery on land. It also eschewed the idea of a traditional cruise buffet and replaced it with a food court.

As such, their dining options are exquisite and more refined than some of the cruises that primarily cater to families with children. Their outstanding service is matched only by their exquisite gourmet food, most of which is complimentary. In fact, only two restaurants on Crystal’s dining list incur additional fees, and even those offer each passenger one initial complimentary meal. Celebrity doesn’t stand up to Carnival as far as the number of options goes, with only two dozen restaurants in total, and up to a dozen per ship. But each one features menus crafted by Michelin-starred chef Cornelius Gallagher, so you’re definitely not going to go hungry.

Are the portions on cruise ships smaller than in traditional restaurants?

Some cruise lines – such as Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises and Holland America – have special restaurants reserved for VIP guests, usually a mix of passengers in the top suites and the most frequent cruisers on that line. These dining venues are included in the cost of the cruise yet may require reservations for dinner. Holland America offers flexible dining options or reserved seating, depending on your preference. The cruise line has just over a dozen restaurants and features a mix of included and specialty venues on each ship.

If you’re looking for a cruise line that will keep your day jam-packed with fun activities, this is the cruise line for you. And if you’re looking for a cruise line with amazing food served by friendly waitstaff—this cruise line is also for you. Their mid-sized ships offer plenty to do, and more importantly, plenty to eat.

If you’re looking for more of a casual experience, NCL, Disney Cruise Line and Royal Caribean may be more suitable. Lastly, all of the cruise lines mentioned cater for special dietary needs, but when it comes down to the variety of food Oceania Cruises, Seabourn, and Celebrity Cruises offer the most choice. Sure, Carnival has added-fee dining in the way of steak and seafood, but in terms of free fare, Carnival has the most impressive array of alternative dining options for which you won't have to shell out anything extra. In the early days of cruising, travelers could only choose between set seating in the main dining room or a trip to the buffet for a more casual experience. These days, passengers are spoiled for choice, with some of the world's largest vessels offering dozens of options each.

Jail Cells? Morgues? Your Cruise Ship Has Some Surprises for You The New York Times

does cruise ships have morgues

There was a time when Carnival operated some of the biggest cruise ships in the world. While the sea may be vast and the journey long, the presence of experienced medical personnel on board ensures that passengers are in safe hands, even in the face of life’s final destination. Remember, these processes are in place to respect those who have passed and to ensure the continued comfort and enjoyment of the living cruising enthusiasts on board. So, while the topic is grim, the sea of information provided here should illuminate the realities of life (and death) aboard a cruise ship, keeping surprises at bay. Travel insurance data suggests about three-quarters of cruise ship deaths are from expected natural causes.

What Happens When Someone Dies on a Cruise?

The answer to this question is, yes, cruise ships do have morgues. Since cruise ships are like portable, miniature cities, having a morgue along with various other services makes perfect sense. While no one likes to think about someone dying while cruising the open seas, death is a natural process that can occur at any time.

Cruise ship morgues have space for several bodies

They're still packed with a variety of attractions, including multiple entertainment venues, casinos, spas and lots of deck-top fun zones such as water parks and ropes courses. In recent years, Carnival also has deployed two of its vessels to Australia to operate voyages from Sydney and Brisbane. In a departure from Carnival's American-focused business model, the Australia sailings are aimed mostly at the local Australian market, though they are open to American travelers.

Cabins and suites

Here are five unexpected features on ships, some of which you hopefully won’t discover on your own. If you or a loved one were injured in a maritime incident, we can connect you to lawyers for a free consultation about compensation that may be available to you. If you have questions or have experienced the event of a death on a ship yourself, please share in the comments. It could be worth finding out how they assist in the event of needing repatriation, as this can be quite an involved process and overwhelming at this emotional time. A death certificate will need to be issued, and the cause of death may dictate what will happen next. An accompanying passenger to the deceased will also tend to disembark with the body.

Cheaper than a Care Home or Hospice

In fact, the lower tiers of the Carnival program are among the most stingy in the entire cruise universe. You'll receive things like a single complimentary bottle of water (at the Red tier) and a single free drink that only can be ordered on the last night of a cruise (at the Gold tier). As is typical with cruise line loyalty programs, lower tiers don't bring all that much in terms of truly valuable benefits. During the evenings, there is an official dress code, but it's pretty laid-back. Most nights are designated "cruise casual," which means just that — khakis or jeans, polo shirts, sundresses, etc.

Once the inevitable occurs, the cruise lines swiftly swing into action to manage the situation efficiently, ensuring minimal impact on other passengers’ experiences. At this juncture, the body is usually handed over to local authorities or a local medical examiner’s office, as per federal regulations and international agreements. But it provides necessary facilities in the rare case of a passenger death, allowing the cruise line to properly manage the body on board rather than storing it in a makeshift area.

For comparison, the annual death rate in the general US population is about 8 in 1,000 people. The deceased’s family will be notified, usually via the emergency contact info provided when booking. Terms and conditions apply to all offers and prices displayed on this website. Fares are subject to availability and operator booking conditions.

This short video features an onboard morgue on the Carnival Fantasy cruise ship (one of the smallest Carnival cruise ships at the time of service). Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse, notably, has its very own in-house brewery you can see behind glass walls — something still relatively rare on cruise ships. It makes house beers including Parched Pig West Coast IPA and Parched Pig Toasted Amber which you'll find on many Carnival vessels in kegs and cans. You'll find at least one of its ships sailing out of pretty much every major port city around the country. In 2013, a grievance arose against Celebrity Cruises involving their vessel, the Celebrity Equinox.

The Reality of Deaths on Cruise Ships

The concept of a morgue on a cruise ship might raise eyebrows, but they are not as elaborate as their counterparts on land. While regular morgues are built to conduct autopsies and house multiple bodies for longer periods, cruise ship morgues are simpler and primarily designed for temporary storage. The process involves cooperation with local authorities, embassies, and funeral services to arrange for the repatriation of the deceased. This complex coordination ensures that the family of the deceased can make necessary arrangements in their home country. It’s important to note that the specific procedures and policies can vary among cruise lines. Each company has established protocols in place to handle these situations professionally and compassionately.

For storage, there are stainless steel refrigerated compartments or pull-out cold drawers to contain bodies. Basic embalming tools, cleaning supplies, body bags, and personal protective equipment are also kept for handling deceased persons. The morgue on a cruise ship is a very small, clinical room located out of the way from main passenger areas, often on a lower service deck without windows. Cruise ships are required by maritime law to have basic medical facilities, including a morgue.

Fall-related accidents were found to be the most common cause of death among passengers, followed by cardiac arrests and suicides. Crew members, on the other hand, were found to be at higher risk for suicide, murder, and falls. These findings highlight the need for safety precautions and awareness while at sea. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention additionally requires each ship that calls or does a homeport while at a United States port to report any deaths immediately. I’ve heard it reported many times that some older folk spend their last days cruising rather than go to a care home because it works out cheaper. Without insurance, the costs may have to be covered by the passenger’s family.

Most vessels are required to have a morgue and additional body bags in the event of an emergency. As the ship reaches its next port, arrangements are made for the body to be unloaded and transferred to local authorities. Cruise lines have established procedures in place to coordinate with these authorities and ensure a smooth transition. It is important to note that the responsibility for further procedures, such as determining the cause of death or arranging for a funeral, usually falls under the jurisdiction of local authorities. Their job is to assist with details of repatriating the deceased passenger and contacting a funeral home. They help families work with the local authorities, deal with insurance, and make travel arrangements.
